The Social Stepback: Twitter
What I'm thinking of now that the Musk deal moves from meme to reality.
Twitter has been my primary hub for ten years. It was where I documented my move back to Northern Virginia after spending more time in my college town. It served as a great spot to make Blacksburg friends and I became extremely familiar with how to scan news. I wasn’t always successful at checking my biases and echo chamber, but I knew how to navigate around the algorithim when I really wanted multiple perspectives.
Alas, with Musk’s admittance to defeat, I now have a more detestable face than Jack Dorsey’s - equivalent to Mark Zuckerberg - to associate with my Twitter grind. With each scroll of my thumb, I contribute to metrics that allow Musk to personally enrich himself as he institutes a regime that will be seeking more ways to monetize and please advertisers.
My escape hatch must be built.
